Medicine
Health was a very big thing in Ancient Greece. About half of the children died before age 10 because of injuries or illnesses. The Greeks believed in many gods and one of the gods that they believed in was named Asclepius. Asclepius is the Greek god for medicine and healing. They believed that he could had the power to heal any wound. The priests were originally in charge of the healing of the body. The priests would be in Greek temples using herbs and praying for the person with the injury or illness. Occasionally they even had sacrifices. They did that until the 400s B.C.
Hippocrates was the one that changed not only Greek medicine, but the worlds health forever. His theory was to actually go out and fix the illness or injury as fast as they can. Instead of waiting for the gods to heal the injured he actually tried to find out what was wrong with them and heal them as fast as they can. He also came up with the theory that to stay healthy, you should eat healthy foods.
He was very successful with his theory and he even made a oath. It was called the Hippocratic Oath. This oath is used by medical schools today. It lets all of his students promise to always take care of there patients.
